Dubrovnik is a special place in Croatia. Whether or not you’ve watched Game of Thrones and recognize sites from King’s Landing, the city has a magical appeal. Rich with cultural heritage, the narrow streets are lined with tourist shops to indulge your passions. There are a few large squares bustling with activity and restaurants. I was fortunate to be able to work while traveling, so I connected remotely at the cafés and bars along the main limestone-paved pedestrian street, Stradun or Placa. I walked the walls to circle around the old city from up high. From there I climbed the medieval towers and took in the views. At the water’s edge, I found people diving into the sea. When you’re exploring the town and if you’re here in the summer on a hot day, find one of the ice cream shops to cool off. But make sure not to miss the gates, cathedral, and the Large Fountain of Onofrio. If you have time, there are also some other excursions you can do, including the cable car, Franciscan Church and Monastery, the Museum of Modern Art Dubrovnik (MOMAD), Rector’s Palace, Fort of St. John, Banje Beach, and the island of Lokrum. I was looking forward to visiting Croatia and Hvar for a long time. Finally, I got my chance. Hvar was really wonderful. I arrived at the port by ferry from Split and found a quick way up the hill to my Airbnb. I would become very familiar with the streets over the next week as I ventured back and forth into the old town. The port itself is very lively with many people taking leisurely strolls through the square. There are restaurants, cafés, and bars lining the waterfront. During the day, boats came in and out of the harbor with people eager to swim at the beaches given the perfect weather. I found Pokonji Dol Beach to be a nice spot with really warm water. Hula Hula was also a lot of fun; you’ll just have to go there to experience it. I would play tennis at the club nearby and come down to the water to take a dip and relax on the rocky outcropping. At night, everyone showed up to unwind over dinner and drinks. Of course, you can’t miss the after-party at Carpe Diem Beach. I’ll never forget the boat ride over to the island and everyone singing “All I need is your love tonight.” Hvar actually has quite a bit of history. Hike up to the fortress (Tvrdava Fortica) to take in the amazing views and think about the past. Originally, the Byzantines set up a citadel there, but it was the Venetians who established the medieval castle. There were even some battles fought here; for example, in 1571 in a conflict with the Ottoman Empire, Hvar was sacked by the Turkish fleet. Finally, no trip to Hvar would be complete without visiting the nearby islands. You can easily take a tour that goes to the Pakleni Islands, Budikovac, Vis, and Biševo. Split is the second biggest city in Croatia with no shortage of activities. I was staying in a nice place near Vukovarska ulica, just a 10 minute walk from the port. I found the nearest Tommy and Konzum supermarkets and got whatever I needed for the week. Old Split is a walled city with markets, squares, narrow streets, and even tunnels. The Roman ruins are fantastic, and Diocletian’s Palace is really well preserved. Nearby this ancient area, there’s the Corinthian-designed Cathedral of St. Domnius. If you have time to explore, check out Zlatni Rat (Golden Horn), Brela, or the Pakleni Islands for quiet coves and splendid beaches. Or, if you are looking for good views, check out Marjan Forest Park and Marjan Stairway, or just go rock climbing on the cliffs. There are other galleries and museums you can visit as well. I spent most of my time around the port by the old town, walking the lively boardwalk with restaurants and bars. I was also working remotely, so I would spend part of the day connected from the waterfront cafés. Then, I would chill at either Bacvice Beach or Firule Beach. There’s a great tennis club right there, so I was able to play almost every day. Well I can’t wait to get back to Split. Hope you get to enjoy this place soon. Take care all.
